1. Pack Smartly

Efficiency in travel starts with your packing. When you leave the house for a week or more, it may be tempting to bring your entire closet with you. After all, you need to account for different weather, spills, and other factors.

However, there’s a good chance you’ll end up overpacking. Heavy luggage can slow you down when navigating the airport, so it’s essential you lightly pack — especially if you have to carry your bags around a lot.

Lightly packing is easier said than done, so use these smart tactics when organizing your luggage:

  • Lists: Before the trip, jot down the essentials for your vacation. This tactic helps you decide what you need and what you can live without while you’re gone. When you’re on the trip, you’ll be glad you left the non-essentials at home.
  • Cubes: Even the essential items can stack up in your luggage. Consider packing cubes if you need more space but don’t want to strain your body. These bags keep your belongings organized without making your luggage too heavy.
  • Laundry: If your trip is 30 days, you don’t have to bring 30 days’ worth of clothes. Find laundry services in the area and allow yourself to pack less.

2. Carry Portable Chargers

Nowadays, cell phones have become essential for travel. When something goes wrong in unfamiliar territory, you need a way to communicate with your family or emergency services. Phone batteries only last so long, so you’re out of luck if it’s dead. One way to enhance your travel efficiency is by bringing a portable charger.

Portable chargers or power banks let you charge your phone and other devices while traveling. Quality chargers will last around two years if you care for them, so keep them cool and dry at all times.

Power banks come in handy when you’re in a hurry to charge your phone and don’t have time to sit by an electrical outlet. Just plug in your portable charger and keep traveling!

3. Take Direct Flights

Transportation could be the most stressful part when traveling, whether you’re boarding a plane, ferry, train, or rental car. The fastest way to get from point A to point B is often by plane — but what can get in the way of your travel plans?

Delayed and canceled flights are frustrating events you may run into. Research shows about 30,000 flights face delays daily, so it’s hard to predict when it will happen to you.

What’s the solution? Take direct flights to reduce the odds of delays and increase your efficiency. Imagine you’re looking for flights from Atlanta to Los Angeles. There are cheaper flights with layovers in St. Louis, Dallas, and Denver.

However, the direct flight gets you there faster and makes your trip easier. The last thing you want is to run through the airport to catch your flight as if you’re in “Home Alone 2.”

Direct flights also have a more positive environmental impact than connecting flights. Global warming is on many minds nowadays, so take direct flights to lower your carbon footprint. Planes use more energy to take off than the flying itself, making direct flights a more sustainable option.

4. Use Public Transportation

When you reach your destination, you’ll need ways to get around. Traffic can be challenging to navigate if you’re not a local, so take the pressure off yourself and use public transportation. On your trip, look for these three options to get around town.

Buses

Buses are excellent forms of public transportation because you can find them in urban and rural areas. They’re large and can typically fit 50 or more people at a time — convenient for large traveling groups. They’re not the fastest vehicles, but they are time-efficient.

Another reason to take the bus is the environmental impact. Transportation is more environmentally friendly when one vehicle carries 50 people compared to four, making buses a better option than the typical sedan.

Nowadays, more cities are adopting electric buses to be even more eco-friendly. These buses have no tailpipe emissions and are much quieter than diesel-powered machines. Additionally, they’re less likely to break down, making your travel time more efficient.

Metro

Traffic can become congested in large cities, making you late for your flight or dinner reservation. For example, Chicago drivers lose 155 hours annually from traffic jams. Getting around the city is more efficient if you use the metro. You won’t get stuck in traffic using the subway, so use this urban transit to maximize your time on the go.

Trains

If you don’t enjoy flying, you have other options to get around. For example, you can take long-distance trains to your destination thanks to their high efficiency. This option is particularly beneficial in European countries where the population centers are close to each other. High-speed rail lines take you from Paris to Amsterdam in three hours or Madrid to Barcelona in two-and-a-half hours.

5. Bring Your Food

When you’re on vacation, it may be challenging to find time to eat. Stopping at restaurants can cost more than you’d like and take time away from your sightseeing. One way to make your travels more efficient is to bring your food.

Non-perishable items like nut butter, trail mix, jerky, and beans are terrific because they don’t need refrigeration or heating. Flying can make transporting food more difficult, but TSA guidelines say you can bring food in your carry-on and checked bags.

Enjoying Efficient Trips

Vacations are about forgetting the typical alarm clock and relaxing. However, making your trip as efficient as possible is still best. Use these five tips to ensure easy travel.
