What Does Infrastructure Include?

Infrastructure is a system made of a society’s social, physical and economic foundations. Each part makes a society’s functioning possible, especially regarding tourism. Tourists couldn’t access or explore regions without the housing, food and entertainment resources already available and thriving.

Ways Infrastructure Development Impacts Travel

Publicly and privately funded infrastructure projects directly impact travel by making it easier and more widely accessible. These are the specific ways it helps you see the world, no matter where you go.

1. Additional Airlines Expand Tourism Possibilities

Airports are always growing. They add runways, restaurants and long-term parking lots so tourists can visit from more places. These expansions often include additional direct flights to and from new locations. Private funding makes these expansions possible and allows travelers to explore new regions.

When more people arrive in a specific geographic area, that area experiences a boost in economic growth because more people spend money locally. The funds are reinvested in public infrastructure and partnerships with private companies, sustaining the new rise in tourism for the long term.

2. Interstates Speed Road Travel

Getting stuck in traffic during a road trip is never fun. Areas lacking interstate highways or more than two-lane roads could see less tourism due to the higher likelihood of traffic jams. When infrastructure development occurs on roads and highways, like increasing the number of lanes, it becomes easier for tourists to reach new destinations.

Local communities also benefit from these expansions. Rebuilding after emergencies becomes easier with additional lanes and better-connected interstate highway systems. Machinery like hydro excavation trucks can reach devastated communities quickly and use high-pressure water tanks to dismantle packed soil after landslides or floods.

Residents also deal with less traffic when driving around town. They may be more inclined to go to restaurants or entertainment venues to spend money, adding revenue to public funding to keep up with its infrastructure plans.

3. Maintenance Prevents Dips in Tourism

Keeping roads open is vital to accessing numerous types of travel, like roadways, interstate exits, airports and more. However, you wouldn’t pack your favorite snacks for a three-hour road trip on a highway covered in potholes.

Infrastructure maintenance is crucial to tourism. It prevents costly repairs, keeps roadways open and sets everyone at ease about traveling through previously challenging areas for drivers. People loading their vehicles with jumper cables and first-aid kits in case of accidents will gain peace of mind if they’re traveling on well-kept roads.

4. Green Energy Expands Power Grid Possibilities

Energy infrastructure is crucial for travelers. It keeps the lights on in your favorite hotels and restaurants. It also makes new tourism resources possible by expanding the electrical output of a local grid. A city could install a theme park if its newly boosted power supply utilized solar or wind farms to double its production.

Green energy also attracts sustainably minded consumers. People who prefer to travel only when they can plan minimal planetary impact could expand their destination list to locations with additional green energy resources.

5. Improved Internet Access Makes Any Location Reachable

Internet networks connect communities and are part of any soft infrastructure development. People won’t lose access on vacation or while traveling through regions to other destinations if a city has robust internet services.

Widespread network access also makes locations more appealing to tourists. They’d always be able to reach their email inboxes, social media platforms and travel websites, making even remote destinations better travel opportunities.

6. Increased Travelers Boosts Job Availability

Employers need bigger teams when more people are traveling. A restaurant serving 600 people nightly would need more waiters than a diner serving 50 customers. The new job opportunities created by infrastructure expansions and boosts in tourism help local communities thrive.

San Antonio recently demonstrated this benefit of tourism boosting the job market after surging from 23 million visitors in 2020 to 34.8 million in 2022. During the same period, unemployment dropped from 13% in 2020 to around 5% in 2022. The hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues taking care of tourists need more people ready to help the additional visitors. Tourism grows when infrastructure improves, creating a cyclical support system.

Look Forward to Infrastructure Supporting the Travel Industry

Learning more about infrastructure development and its impact on travel makes the connections clear. Travelers need accessible roads, travel resources, workers supporting their activities and more to continue visiting a geographic region. The next time you plan a trip, you’ll see how your destination’s infrastructure makes your vacation possible.
